Favorite activities include: boating, diving, sport fishing, whale watching, kayaking, snorkeling, horse-back riding, hiking, wind surfing, kite boarding, and mountain biking.  Further information on a few of these activities is listed below.

Boating

San Carlos is a boaters dream.  As you can see from the level of marine services available, San Carlos is a favorite boating destination for many Americans, Canadians, and Mexicans alike.  Which ever your preference from sailing to cruising the area in and around San Carlos is ideal any time of year.  Up and down the coast there are numerous coves, caves, and islands just waiting to be explored.  And with the abundance of marine life found in the Sea of Cortez, you will be sure to encounter creatures as diverse as sea lions and dolphins to giant grey whales.  A world of marine exploration awaits you in San Carlos.

Diving

Formed some five million years ago as the result of the San Andreas fault separating the Baja California peninsula from the continent, the Sea of Cortez measures approximately 800 miles long, 139 miles wide, and up to 11,000 feet deep. Bringing together species from both the tropical south and north, the sea is home to more than 800 varieties of fish and more than 3,000 species of maritime animals including whales, sea lions, and dolphins.

The crystal-clear and consistently calm waters of the Sea of Cortez provide an incredible showcase for the vast species of maritime life. Visibility is excellent, often extending to 100 feet or more, and water temperatures are comfortable, with summer water temperatures reaching well into the 80s. Whether you are a first-timer or a veteran diver, you will be impressed with the incredible diving experience you will find in San Carlos. More than two-dozen dive sites are located off San Carlos and San Pedro Nolasco Island. These sites include two artificial reefs, the “Presidente Diaz Ordaz,” a 330-foot long ferryboat, and the “Albatun,” a 180-foot sunken tuna boat that now rests at approximately 20 meters in depth.

Sport Fishing

Fishing in San Carlos is world-class. With deep water only a few miles off shore, even small boats can attempt to land the “big ones”.  Several tournaments are held in San Carlos each year.  From late fall into spring, the bottom fishing is excellent in and around the many islands and points in the area. Target species include red snapper, sea trout, yellowtail and sea bass. During the summer months, as the water temperatures rise, the exotic big game species are present, including marlin, sailfish, dorado (mahi-mahi) and tuna.  Several local restaurants will clean and cook your catch for you, so that you may immediately enjoy the fruits of your labor.
