San Carlos currently has infrastructure in place to accommodate a projected population of 36,000 residents. This infrastructure includes a completed main boulevard and major arteries with utilities spanning the entire length (approximately 20 Km or 12 miles). A remarkable fact, considering the present population of San Carlos only numbers 7,000 residents.
Electric
Electricity for San Carlos is supplied by two massive diesel plants located along the coast in the southern section of Guaymas. These diesel facilities are operated by the Federal Electrical Commission, an independent federal monopoly www.cfe.com. High tension lines carrying 33,000 volts of electricity run from Guaymas to the San Carlos substation located in the Ranchitos sector of town. The electrical infrastructure is designed to support 36,000 residents.
New Natural Gas Pipeline
Construction is currently under-way on a 350-mile natural gas pipeline. The pipeline, a joint venture between El Paso Corporation and DKRW Energy LLC to be completed by 2008, will carry liquefied natural gas from Puerto Libertad to Guaymas and beyond. The readily available supply of natural gas ensures that future power needs may be easily addressed through an added environmentally-sound power facility fueled by clean-burning natural gas.
Sewer
The recently-built San Carlos sewage system consists of sectional septic tanks that accumulate and periodically pump out waste water into a central collector pipeline that terminates at the San Carlos Country Club. Here, COAPAES operates a solar treatment plant consisting of a three-chamber oxygenation pond. The resulting effluent is currently utilized for irrigation purposes on the
San Carlos Golf Course.
Additional Reuse Availability
Additional reuse water will soon be available from the oxygenation lagoon near the Guaymas International Airport. Guaymas has a surplus of reuse water in this lagoon and no reuse needs in the area. Therefore, a new oxygenation lagoon is being built near the entrance to San Carlos with a pipeline being built by COAPAES San Carlos which will deposit the effluent into the oxygenation lagoon at the San Carlos Country Club. As the supply of increases , is in the process of building a pipeline
Water
San Carlos is a Comissariat and part of the City and Port of Guaymas (population - 175,000 residents). Each community has its own independent water system, although both are administrated by a quasi-governmental agency called Comision de Agua Potable y Alcantarillado del Estado de Sonora (COAPAES) www.coapaes.gob.mx.
The independent water system of San Carlos was built by Grupo Caballero and dedicated to COAPAES. The water reserves are sufficient to supply a projected 36,000 person domestic demand. Water is pumped from two deep source wells located in the La Escondida and El Valiente areas. These wells currently produce water capacity for a demand of approximately 950 gallons per minute. Additional water reserves are available as community growth requires. If necessary, COAPAES can install additional pumping stations along the pipeline and/or open additional wells.
